Vermithrax is the name of the dragon in 1981 film Dragonslayer, which D B Weiss is a fan of and it's also one of GRRM's favorite fantasy films of all time. The scene calls for a list of dragons and at the time I think GRRM had only decided on Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. I don't know if they revealed the inspiration for the other names. Slk9A39.
