This new series is a prequel to the decade-long show that broke and healed the hearts of many, taking place 200 years before the ill-fated events.
The true power of these dragons can be seen most in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season 8, when the last remaining dragon, Drogon, unleashes havoc on Kings Landing, burning alive thousands of innocent people. For this reason, the dragons are definitely the best and most powerful Game of Thrones beasts/pets/animals.

Vermithrax is the name of the dragon in 1981 film Dragonslayer, which D B Weiss is a fan of and it's also one of GRRM's favorite fantasy films of all time. The scene calls for a list of dragons and at the time I think GRRM had only decided on Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. I don't know if they revealed the inspiration for the other names.
