Everything works great - the kelp is farmed, dropped into hoppers, to chests, and then gets cooked in a smoker and then dropped into a storage chest. I built one using the advice from some older resources, but I don't think it is very well optimized. Based on the new rules for mob spawning the mob platform has to be 24 blocks away from the player, the mobs should fall 22 blocks.
